Title: The Road-Building Bard: Poetry and the Sanctification of the Land
Description: This talk will explore how modernist Hebrew poets of the 1920s and 30s used verse to sanctify the challenging labor of nation-building in the land of Israel. By examining key poems, we will see how poetry created a new national ethos, transforming the figure of the pioneer into a central icon of the Jewish homeland.
Bio: Ido Telem is the Samuel W. and Goldye Marian Spain Postdoctoral Fellow in Jewish Studies at Rice University. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago, and specializes in modern Hebrew and German literature and thought, with a focus on the cultural history of Zionism.
Ido’s research has been published in the Yearbook for European Jewish Literature Studies.
