Great Cantors in Opera – with Hazzan Krohn

Sundays, December 7, 14, 21 at 11:00 AM
In person at Brith Shalom and on YouTube

Join Hazzan David Krohn for a mini-series course exploring the three greatest Cantors in operatic history – Jan Peerce, Richard Tucker, and Robert Merrill.

Together, we will explore their Yiddish roots, their family’s immigration from the shtetl to America, and how they incorporated Judaism in the secular world of opera.

Each of the three sessions will be devoted to one of these great artists, examining their lives through cantorial and opera recordings and historic interviews about their “Yiddishkeit” and their incredible careers on both opera stages and the bima.

The 1492 edict expelling the Jews following more than 1,000 years of life on the Iberian peninsula.

We will explore the events surrounding this infamous chapter in Spanish history and the events of the next several centuries (the late Middle Ages and Early Modern times) as the Jews resumed their role as a dispersed nomadic people.

We will delve into the ways in which Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews were forced to interact as well as the integration and anti-Semitism Jews encountered living amongst the various new lands in which they settled.
