Long Time Educator to Be Honored At Brith Shalom

The greatest thing a teacher can hear is the moment when his/her student says, “Oh, now I get it”!

Nancy Pryzant Picus retired in 2016 from her post as the Shlenker School’s Director of Jewish Learning. But she’s never stopped sharing her love of Judaism and building community through the love of Torah.

Picus will be honored at Congregation Brith Shalom (CBS) on Shabbat Shuvah, September 26, for her outstanding service to the synagogue community. She will offer the dvar Torah during the service.

Picus has coordinated Torah readings at CBS for the past ten years. She took over assigning Haftarah readings, daveners and gabbaiim for the Shabbat Torah service a year ago.

“That’s no simple task,” said CBS Rabbi Ranon Teller. “We have a sizable number of Torah readers. Every week, we have six or seven volunteer readers. It is central to who we are as a congregation.

“As with any large group endeavor, she is able to manage to this complicated project with grace and poise. As a professional and a congregant, she has a deep understanding of synagogue life. I rely on her as a thought-leader and a partner”.

Over many years at Brith shalom, Picus has taught trop classes, led sisterhood study groups, made Shavuot presentations and taught an Adult Education class in the development of the Siddur.

In the community, she has taught in the Melton program and at Kehillah High.

Picus told the JHV she’s always known she wanted to be a teacher.
“When I was a child, I used to line up my siblings and play school”, she said. “It’s in my blood. It’s who I am.

“I’m most proud of my work at the Shlenker School. When I started, the school was an adjunct at Beth Israel. When I left almost three decades later, it was central to the entire community.

“I’m proud of the six or seven kids I’ve taught who became rabbis.  Somewhere in there I got them on the path. But it’s not just the rabbis. I had one child who told once told me ‘This is the greatest day of my life. I finished reading Harry Potter and chanted Torah’.
