Cool Runnings – The Story of the Israeli Bobsled and Skeleton Federation
Did you know that Israel has a bobsled team? In fact, Israel has two bobsled teams and three skeleton athletes, all training and competing to quality to represent Israel in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games!

If you watched the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, you might have seen Israeli skeleton athlete, AJ Edelman, represent Israel for the first time in a sliding sport at the Olympics. He was joined by former Israeli bobsledder and current President of the Bobsleigh Skeleton Israel (BSI), David Greaves, as part of Israel’s official delegation, walking in the Opening Ceremony. The moment in time was an accumulation of 20 years of hard work, perseverance and the overcoming of many obstacles that ultimately proved Israel could be a viable player in winter sliding sports.

In the early 2000’s, Greaves, together with three other Jews: A former Air Force pilot, a retired two-time NFL Superbowl Champion and a security tech expert, made Aliyah and represented Israel in bobsled, qualifying Israel for two World Championships. Fast forward almost 20 years, BSI is an official voting member of Israel’s Olympic Committee and is dedicated to representing Israel proudly in the international bobsled and skeleton circuit.

How did Israel get a bobsled team when there is barely enough snow to ski on Har Hermon? Where do Bobsledders and Skeleton athletes train? Is this Israel’s version of the Jamaican bobsled team? And, why would anyone want to slide down an ice track at 80+ mph, on nothing more than a thin ‘skeleton-like’ metal sled? These questions and more will be answered during the talk.

Panelists include: David Greaves and Larry Sidney, a former Israeli Skeleton athlete, current Israeli Curling athlete and current Secretary General of BSI. David and Larry are joined by current BSI athletes, pending availability
