In June, we began a monthly learning session on Shabbat Morning. The learning consists of series of 3 to 4 monthly sessions on a specific topic. The topic of the first series is Sefer Shoftim (Judges) and is being facilitated by Andy Hoffman. Over the four sessions, Andy is leading discussions which include perspectives from archaeology, anthropology, history, and our biblical text.
Andy’s perspective on Torah study isn’t come and be taught, instead, it is “come and study with me so we learn together.”
The first session in June focused on the settlement of Canaan from the perspective of both history and the associated biblical texts. The second session in July will feature the stories of Othniel and the conflict between Ehud and Eglon. The third session will be on the stories about Gideon vs. Moab and the fourth session will focus on the story of Jephtah.
We are making abundant material available to you to prepare for your participation, including copies of the Shoftim text in Hebrew and English translation. (Alternatively, you are welcome to use your own Tanah.) We will share these texts and articles for you to download from a Dropbox. Please print out your own copies if you want them and have them available during the study sessions.
We request that participants print and bring with them the materials to be used in the learning session. A very limited number of copies of Andy’s materials will be available at the session itself. Click here to access and print the materials.
Following Andy’s four sessions will be sessions led by Debbie Kagan. Other facilitators will follow.
