The High Holiday machzor is a microcosm of Jewish thought throughout Jewish history. Its prayers and poetry are designed to enable us to rise above the day-to-day of our lives, to engage in introspection and reflection, to repent and goal set, and to emerge refreshed. Metaphors flow through the text, including judgment and the Book of Life, G-d's kingship, Memory, Annulment of vows, and a re-enactment of death.
