Peter Gingiss presents our current series in the Shabbat Study program. This series began October 18th and concludes February 20th.

Peter is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Houston, specializing in sociolinguistics and the former president of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest.

The series will be an overview of languages either spoken exclusively by Jews, or languages in which Jews have produced important works in the Jewish literary canon.

The first session was an outline of what linguists know about languages, kind of the linguists’ equivalent of Maimonides 13 articles of faith.

The five planned sessions are:
1. Overview
2. Hebrew, Aramaic
3. The case for Greek and Arabic
4. Yiddish and Ladino
5. Other possibilities and Conclusion

In March, we will begin our next four-part series.  Entitled Treasury in the Trash: the Story of the Cairo Geniza, the series will be led by Sara Norris.

The Cairo Geniza (CG) is the most diverse collection of manuscripts ever discovered. It contained writings that span a 1000 years and included materials related to sacred and religious life as well as secular writing. Its contents give us insight into life in medieval North Africa and the Eastern Meditteranean.
