Congregation Brith Shalom takes seriously the obligation of a lifetime of Jewish learning and offers the following adult learning opportunities:

Year-Long Courses

Saturday Morning/Afternoon

1:00 PM           Shabbat Study Group

On March 16, we begin our third Shabbat Study series to be led by Sue Resnick. The title of Sue’s series is Psalms.

The (tentative) schedule of topics:

March 16 - Introduction: Everything you ever knew about Psalms is wrong 
April 6  - Daily Psalms (Note date change to first Shabbat of the month due to Pesach)
May 18 - Psalms, Prophecy, and the End of Days
June 15 - Psalms to be Sung 

For these sessions, please bring a Tanach or a book of the Psalms that has the Psalms in Hebrew and English.  Only a few books will be available at the meetings.

1:00 PM           Inspired Book Club  (2nd Saturday of the month)

The Inspired Book Club meets in the Board Room on the 2nd Saturday of each month (following Shabbat services and lunch) from about 1:00-2:00 pm.  Volunteers lead the book discussions. All are welcome to attend.

 At the December meeting, we voted to read Mind the Gap, by Matthias Henze.  The book is available through many on-line and local bookstores, and on Kindle.  (Kindles and other electronic media are not allowed in the synagogue on Shabbat.  For information about this policy, contact Rabbi Teller.)

The reading schedule for Mind the Gap:
February 9 - Part II, Chs. 3 and 4 (pp.53-114) - led by Ed Chaika.
March 9 - Part II, Chs. 5, 6 and 7 (pp. 115-196) - led by Lisa Trimachi.

APRIL 13TH: The CBS Inspired Book Club will meet on Saturday, April 13, in the Board Room following Shabbat services and lunch.  Our special guest will be Mind the Gap author Dr. Matthias Henze, who will answer our questions about the book.

The IBC is taking nominations for our next book, to begin in May.  Please send your nominations to Sue Resnick - [email protected].

Sunday Mornings

9:45 AM         Making Sense of the Shabbat Morning Liturgy - 8 Session Class

Taught by Cantor Levine

This class will delve into the deeper meanings of the Shabbat morning liturgy, through structure and historical and theological context, to identify the issues through which we are challenged to confront and build Jewish identity in the 21st century. Hebrew reading is helpful but not required.

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School 

The Melton & More program offers rich, in-depth Jewish studies courses designed by The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning as well as local Houston faculty. Jewish learning classes, including Jewish Denominations, is taught by Cantor Levine! Other courses offered by CBS congregants include: Angels & The Afterlife and Sustainable Eating, with Nancy Picus, Jewish-Muslim Relations with Aaron Howard, Jewish Medical Ethics with Rabbi Jill Levy, Jewish Superheroes with Nomi Barancik, and Jewish Rites of Passage with Rabbi Samantha Safran. Classes run for 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 weeks, and cover many fascinating topics. Click here for details and registration.
