Adult Education

Congregation Brith Shalom takes seriously the obligation of a lifetime of Jewish learning and offers the following adult learning opportunities:

Year-Long Courses

Saturday Morning/Afternoon

1:00 PM           Shabbat Study Group

Sue Resnick will complete her series in June. July will be a skip month. The next series will begin in August (8/17) and continue on the third shabbat through November.  It will be led by Aaron Howard:
Starting on August 17, we will be begin our fourth Shabbat Study series which will continue into the new synagogue year. Aaron Howard will lead the series. The sessions will, as  usual,  take place after kiddush (about 1 pm) on the third shabbat of each month.  The series will look at the Book of Kohelet. The first session will situate Kohelet in the context of other Middle Eastern and of modern wisdom Literature

For these sessions, please bring a Tanach or a book of the Psalms that has the Psalms in Hebrew and English.  Only a few books will be available at the meetings.

1:00 PM           Inspired Book Club  (2nd Saturday of the month)

The Inspired Book Club meets in the Board Room on the 2nd Saturday of each month (following Shabbat services and lunch) from about 1:00-2:00 pm.  Volunteers lead the book discussions. All are welcome to attend.

Our August 10 book will be Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor by Yossi Klein HaLevi.

The Florence Melton Adult Mini-School 

The Melton & More program offers rich, in-depth Jewish studies courses designed by The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning as well as local Houston faculty. Jewish learning classes, including Jewish Denominations, is taught by Cantor Levine! Other courses offered by CBS congregants include: Angels & The Afterlife and Sustainable Eating, with Nancy Picus, Jewish-Muslim Relations with Aaron Howard, Jewish Medical Ethics with Rabbi Jill Levy, Jewish Superheroes with Nomi Barancik, and Jewish Rites of Passage with Rabbi Samantha Safran. Classes run for 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 weeks, and cover many fascinating topics. Click here for details and registration.
