Congregation Brith Shalom is governed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Trustees. The Executive Committee implements decisions of the Board of Trustees and works with committees and the Board to make synagogue policy changes. The Executive Committee also serves as Personnel Committee of the synagogue. The Executive Committee consists of the seven synagogue officers, plus up to two additional members appointed by the President.

The Personnel Committee provides oversight for all personnel related matters. This committee, made up of Executive Committee members, works with the Director of Administration and the Rabbi. It establishes personnel policies on such matters as vacation and benefits. It also ensures that all paid staff receives periodic performance reviews and establishes compensation practices. The current Executive Committee members are Larry Estes and Milton Mosk. If you have any questions regarding this committee, please contact either member through the office.

The Nominating Committee is a standing committee of the Board of Trustees and is charged by the constitution to nominate at least one person for each office for the Board of Trustees and for each vacancy occurring on the Board of Trustees for election at the annual meeting of the congregation. The Committee by Constitution consists of two past presidents, one of whom will be chairperson, two trustees of the Board, and one member of the congregation who is not a member of the Board. The committee reviews suggestions for members for the Board of Trustees from the congregation and selects the nominees based on the needs of the congregation and the talent and skill of the members.

Diversity Outreach Committee:

The Diversity Outreach Committee links Brith Shalom to the larger community through interfaith and intergroup activities meant to:

  • Build relationships, alliances and coalitions with diverse groups and individuals in ways that promote mutual understanding and respect;
  • Educate others about anti-Semitism and help our members understand and eliminate the oppression of others;
  • Develop projects with others that meet needs in the larger community.

Over the years, we have worked toward these goals with a variety of activities, including:

  • Annual African-American/Jewish model seders
  • Participation in the Darfur vigil at the Holocaust Museum
  • Talks on the history and practice of Islam
  • Joint programs with Faith Lutheran Church, our next door neighbor, including visits, opportunities to learn about each others’ religion and customs, a model seder for teens at the church, and a viewing of a film about Deitrich Bonhoeffer, the German Lutheran Pastor who worked against the Nazis

In 2006, the CBS religious school was designated “No Place for Hate” by the Anti-Defamation League in recognition of school programming designed to reduce bias and stereotyping and encourage inclusion. The following year, the CBS board committed the congregation as a whole to the ADL's “Community of Respect” initiative. Since then CBS has been recognized each year for its efforts to promote respect for diversity and to challenge prejudice and discrimination through programs and synagogue activities.

In the fall of 2009, CBS became a member of Interfaith Ministry's Congregation-to-Congregation pilot program, an effort to create meaningful interfaith experiences.

We are always interested in developing new relationships with other communities, and we welcome the involvement of every CBS member in diversity outreach, either as a committee member or as a participant in our events.
