A chavurah is a community within the CBS community. It is a small, cohesive group of synagogue members who gather once a month for social, spiritual, and/or educational experiences, a place where you can form close relationships that last a lifetime.
Strongly supported and encouraged by Rabbi Teller, chavurot of CBS members have flourished and endured. Some chavurot have been together for as long as 30 years! Others are more newly formed. A chavurah can be created based on members’ ages, whether they have children or not, particular interests or any number of common attractions. A chavurah may choose to gather for social activities only, for discussions of relevant topics of the day or of Jewish history and its meanings, for holiday celebrations or for observing life cycle events – or for all of the above and more.
The bonds that form among chavurah members are strong and meaningful. To learn more about joining or forming a chavurah, contact Chavurah Chair, Frances Rubin at

The Chesed Committee is the arm of the congregation that fulfills the great mitzvah of helping those in our community who are in need by performing acts of loving-kindness. The committee offers a myriad of services ranging from driving congregants to services or doctor appointments, cooking and delivering meals in times of need, to simply listening, visiting, and offering a friendly ear.
Fran Floersheimer is the Chair of the Chesed Committee. She emphasizes that the key to the group’s success is empathy, attempting to validate feelings, humor, non-judgmental listening, and the volunteers. She and the 18 committee members are available to lend a friendly hand with the following:
- Home visits and phone calls
- Hospital and/or facility visits, doctors appointment
- Meals, as needed, following an illness or loss
- A shared Shabbat meal
- A ride to Shabbat services or special functions
- Other needs
The Chesed Committee is inspired by two quotations: “the highest form of wisdom is kindness” and “we fall down by ourselves but it takes a friendly hand to lift us up.”
If you or another congregant you know is in need or is in a crisis and would benefit from friendly hands, contact Chesed Chair Fran Floersheimer at 713-772-3448.
Please note: all services provided through Chesed are confidential.
