Kellner Family Member Serving in Israeli Army
Congregation Brith Shalom members Elaine and Abe Kellner's grandson, Ron Evan, is serving in the Israeli Army. Ron is also the son of members Arlene and
The 26-year-old is in Israel, serving in the Israel Defense Forces. He is featured in an article about lone soldiers who serve in the army.
This is an excerpt of the article.
"Ron Evan, 26, from Houston, also volunteers at the center. The son of an Israeli father and American mother, he was active at his synagogue and USY. After Nativ, he decided to return to Israel and serve in the IDF. There, he was taken care of by the Garin Tzabor support system for lone soldiers who are children of expat Israelis. The 20 young people in the program live on a kibbutz and each is assigned a kibbutz family. Evan said, “We were taken care of on the kibbutz, we had our laundry done and our food provided, but not every lone soldier has what I had.” Evan had known Michael Levin, and he is working through the center to help lone soldiers on the Garin Tzabor program."
One of the lesser utilized sections of our siddur is that of Pirkei Avot. There have been a large number of commentaries on Pirkei Avot, and they support the importance of its nature to provide ethics of Judaism. I have decided to focus this article on giving you a brief introduction to Pirkei Avot and teaching you a melody in hope that it will provide an opportunity for us to be more attentive to its teachings. Additionally, Pirkei Avot is commonly studied during Shabbat afternoons in the summer months between Passover and Rosh Hashanah. Therefore, I found it to be a relevant time for this.
Pirkei Avot literally means “Chapters of the fathers”. It was compiled from sayings expressed by sages from 200 BCE up through the teachings of the Rabbis of the Mishnaic period (which began right after the destruction of the Second Temple at about 70 CE). The six chapters of Pirkei Avot mostly deal with Jewish Ethics and are from the tractate titled, “Avot” in the Mishnah.
There are several verses in Pirkei Avot that express the pursuit of peace. The following video link introduces a beautiful melody written for one of these verses (1:18) in Pirkei Avot sung by the Brith Shalom Choir:

The video also provides an additional resource for Pirkei Avot and its melodies. I hope you enjoy!

Brith Shalom Reads: Summer Reading Program
It’s summer, so it’s time for another….
“Brith Shalom Reads”
“Brith Shalom Reads” invites all CBS-ers to read together again this summer!
What was the first mainstream, mass-produced food to carry the OU kosher certification symbol? What popular snack food was finally certified kosher in 1997 when the manufacturer made the switch from lard to vegetable oil for health-conscious reasons? What do some mashgiachs (kosher supervisors) say they do to learn about what’s really going on at the facilities they supervise? The answers are all in “Kosher Nation: Why More and More of America’s Food Answers to a Higher Authority” by SueFishkoff, which is this summer’s “Brith Shalom Reads” selection.
Here’s how it works: Read the selected book at your own pace over the summer. In the fall, we’ll get together to discuss, debate and share insights. It’s fun, it’s free and it’s something you can do indoors during the long, hot, humid, summer days in Houston.
